Offshore Oil Rigs

It is not practical to setup a telephone land line in offshore oil rigs or any vessel/ship of that kind. Usually, the vessels/ships, when they are in the sea, will have the facility and services of organisations involved in IMARSAT (International Maritime Satellite) communication. Vessels/ships fitted with such Imarsat solutions are connected to the world’s most advanced mobile communications network. Mariners on vessels/ships with such solutions can communicate as effectively as they were ashore and crews can remain in contact with their families and friends. Imarsat satellite solutions include voice and fax, circuit switched and packet data, data speeds upto 512 kbps, safety and security services etc. Imarsat’s maritime portfolio can help improve vessel/ship performance, offering internet connectivity access to corporate networks, e-mail, weather and chart updates, position reporting, telemedicine, remote diagnostics, crew calling and other office applications. But, satellite communication is very expensive. The call charges will come to more than Rs. 100 per minute.

If the oil rig/vessel is well within 25 to 30 kilometers range from the land, there are chances that it will be under any mobile service providers’ coverage area. In these places, you can prefer a mobile phone over a satellite communication. But, there are many disadvantages for a mobile phone. Firstly, the vessel may be huge with many closed rooms spanned over 3-5 floors where it is difficult to have the ‘range’. To come under the ‘range’, you may have to climb over the flag mast or get on the top floor. Once or twice it is okay to move to the ‘range’ and attend the phone but not always. Especially when you are working in the office. Secondly, it is hazardous to carry a mobile phone in the sensitive areas of an oil rig. So, it is strictly prohibited to carry a mobile phone in such areas.

In these circumstances, it is recommended to use an Xtend FCT. Now, you may think how an FCT, which works using a mobile phone, can be used in a place where a mobile phone is prohibited. The answer is simple. An FCT can be kept at a safe place, say on the top floor of the vessel/ship where you have the maximum ‘range’. FCT is connected to an EPABX system which has telephones kept in all rooms connected using ordinary telephone cables in the vessel/ship from where you can make or attend telephone calls as you normally do in an office through a normal land phone. In other words, to make it simple, FCT is the safest way to use a mobile phone most effectively and efficiently in an office/business surroundings.

You can setup the communication to the offshore oil rigs, vessels/ships by installing GSM/CDMA Xtend FCT in no time! You can set it up within a few hours and in just 3 steps!

1. Get a GSM/CDMA mobile connection.
2. Attach it to the Xtend FCT device.
3. Install the FCT and start working.

By installing Xtend FCT, you can save money too! Connect the Xtend FCT to an EPABX system and work as you normally do in an office.
